Hiking Trails
From short nature walks at Dr. Thomas Walker to the 85-mile trail network at Cumberland Gap, Barbourville is a gateway to some of the best hiking in the Appalachian foothills.
Trails for Every Level
Barbourville's trail options range from easy, family-friendly nature walks to challenging ridge-line treks. Closest to town, Dr. Thomas Walker State Historic Site offers short, gentle trails through Appalachian forest — perfect for a quick walk or a picnic outing. The terrain is easy and the trails are well-marked.
For the serious hiker, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park is the destination. Over 85 miles of trails wind through the park, from the short paved walk to the Pinnacle Overlook (with stunning tri-state views) to the multi-day Wilderness Road Trail that traces the pioneer route. The Hensley Settlement trail leads to a restored early-1900s mountain community — a hike through both nature and history.
What to Know
Trails at Cumberland Gap range from easy to strenuous. The Pinnacle Road can be driven for those who want the view without the hike, but the trail up is rewarding. Always carry water, wear sturdy shoes, and check weather before heading out — Appalachian weather can change quickly, especially at elevation.
Fall is arguably the best hiking season: cooler temperatures, fewer insects, and spectacular foliage as the hardwood forests turn gold, orange, and red. Spring brings wildflowers and rushing streams. Summer offers deep shade but heat and humidity — hike early morning. Winter trails are quiet and offer stark, frost-covered mountain views.
