Union College, founded in 1879, sits at the heart of Barbourville and gives the city much of its cultural energy. As a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Methodist Church, Union hosts a steady calendar of events open to the community — from athletics and the arts to academic lectures and spiritual gatherings.
The college's presence means Barbourville enjoys cultural offerings unusual for a town of its size: college theatre productions, choral and band concerts, art exhibitions, and visiting speakers. Many of these events are free and open to the public, making Union College a true community resource.
Bulldogs Athletics & Traditions
Union College Bulldogs athletics are a major draw. The college competes in the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference, fielding teams in basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and more. Home games at Memorial Gymnasium and the college's athletic fields draw enthusiastic crowds of students, alumni, and local fans.
Homecoming, typically held in the fall, is the biggest event on the Union calendar. The week brings alumni back to campus for parades, tailgating, the homecoming football or basketball game, class reunions, and the coronation of the homecoming court. It's a celebration that spills out of the campus and into downtown Barbourville.
